Asanti Dance Theatre is an NGO that was
established in 2003. It works to inspire and support local
underprivileged artists to gain a better future via practicing,
teaching, performing and preserving the art and culture of African music
and dance. It also encourages exploration of the way in which we can
bring our traditions into a contemporary framework.
We
do this to help the artists find a better pathway in life, preserve our
rich West African culture and spreed messages of peace, tolerance and
understanding among all people.
Asanti has now had over 20 artists travel internationally, establishing a range of world class careers and artistic practices. We also have many who have stayed in Ghana and continue to work here as professional artists and act as mentors within our organisation.
Our story
Asanti was founded in 2003 by Appiah Annan, one of Ghana's most inspirational and visionary artists.
It was initiated at a time
when many of Ghana's finest dancers and musicians were out of work due
to the collapse of one of the countries leading companies.
Beginning
with just 2 dancers and a drummer, living and training on the beach,
Appiah had a vision of starting an African drum and dance group that
explored the traditional dances and rhythms of Ghana and West Africa. He
hoped to change the lives of those who encountered the group, spreading
messages of peace, togetherness and understanding. Through his
dedication and determination he built Asanti into a world renowned
performance group that has helped many people in the local community
gain a better future.
With the motto of 'Power and Passion'
which is reflected by Asanti's perserverance, dedication and empowering
performances, the NGO continues to explore new ways of engaging and
inspire people both locally and internationally.
They have worked with many students and travelers from around the world over the years and are thankful to all of those who have helped support the NGO.
